Booking Through Thursday (7)

Do your reading habits change when you’re on vacation? Do you read more? Do you indulge in lighter, fluffier books than you usually read? Do you save up special books so you’ll be able to spend real vacation time with them? Or do you just read the same old stuff, vacation or not?

My reading habits definitely change when I'm on vacation as I barely read at all. I tend to either be out-and-about seeing the sights or spending time with my family on vacation so I don't get much reading time. I do squeeze it in whenever I can though.

I used to just take whatever book I felt like reading, but as I read in small amounts when I'm on vacation I've started to be more careful about what I choose to take. Some books have really long chapters so they aren't ideal to pick up for five minutes at a time, whereas others are more suited to this kind of reading. I don't tend to pick a specific genre as long as it has short chapters.

The last time I went on vacation I took Les Liaisons Dangereuses by Choderlos de Laclos which is an ideal vacation read for me. Instead of chapters it is made up of letters ranging from under a page up to six pages at most. It's ideal for picking up, reading a single letter and then putting down.

  1. I'm the opposite - I get more reading done, but it's just me and my husband on vacation. We generally just go to places with beaches and lie on the beach. The perfect place to read.

  2. Yep, you're an outlier on this question. I get more reading done, usually because I'm traveling with people like my parents, who aren't book reviewers... so for them, books and reading time are a nice vacation luxury, built in to the travel.
    And I read fast!!!!
I haven't read Les Liasons Dangereuses, but I have seen the movie. Maybe I'll see if I can get a copy. Do you have a translator of the book you really like?
Here's my answer! Vacation reading, and reading faster than my parents.

  3. oh, that's a good idea - taking a book of letters, or short stories ... or even poetry so you can get in a quick read in between the fun vacation can bring!

  4. No, you're not the only one! I tend to do most of my reading in the evenings, after works & chores -- my "me time" -- whereas when I'm on vacation the day's activities go much later.

The only time I get any reading to speak of done on vacation is while en route, i.e. on a plane.

Now when I was younger I used to do a lot of reading on vacation . . .

  5. I usually do the same, I pick either a short book or a collection of short stories :)

  6. It so much depends on the type of vacation.

  7. That's a nice idea.

  8. That sounds like a great read! I'm like you and barely get any reading done on vacation ... A short book, or something with small chapters, is usually best for me!

  9. Even if it is busy on vacation, the travel time to get there is great reading time for me.

  10. Thank you for all the comments guys :)

Elizabeth - my copy is translated by Douglas Parmee and I think he did a brilliant job!

  11. Short chapters are always the one I choose. Have a great weekend!

  12. Thanks for commenting Yvonne :) I definitely love books with short chapters!
