Covers play a huge role in the books I choose so it's great to have the opportunity to showcase the pretties :)
My shelf candy for this week is Witch Child by Celia Rees.
Pages from a journal are loosely sewn into a quilt. A quilt that lies undisturbed for more than three hundred years until it is carefully taken apart for cleaning and out of its folds falls a powerful and moving story. The story of Mary - granddaughter of a witch.
Over the last four weeks I've had great fun participating in Shelf Candy Saturday. After noticing that my first three books have all been released in the last few months, I decided to do something a little different for my fourth pick. Witch Child was released in 2000 and my copy has survived three house moves and a little over a decade of being read and re-read.
I love this cover because of its simplicity. You can really believe that the girl on the cover is Mary, and the sepia tone makes it seem like an old photograph. The book is set in the 1600s, following Mary as she journeys from England to the America as an early settler.
While I don't know much about this period of history, I do feel that the dress and general look of the model is right. It also fits well with the descriptions of Mary featured in the book. I'm not usually a fan of models on book covers as they rarely fit with what I imagine the character to look like, but this is an exception
