Once Upon a Read-a-Thon - Final Update

I'm a little disappointed with myself for this read-a-thon. I managed to finish the three books I planned on, but I didn't actually spend that much time reading because I was either spending time with my niece or not feeling hugely well. That said I did manage to achieve my goals and I read some awesome books :)

Once Upon A Read-a-thon - Challenges

I've not been doing so well with the actual reading for the read-a-thon after a busy day yesterday and not feeling well today, but I'm taking a break to take part in some of the awesome challenges.

As the story teller, I now want you to tell me which two characters are fighting and WHY! If you want to, you’re also more than welcome to guess the outcome. ;)

Once upon a time, Percy Jackson and Harry Potter were fighting over whether demi-god powers are cooler than wizard powers. Percy obviously thinks demi-gods rule while Harry is on the side of his Hogwarts classmates. I would place money on Harry...unless of course they are anywhere near water, or Percy has that handy Medusa head in which case I'm Greek all the way :)

What is your most anticipated book for 2012?

That has to be 13 by Kelley Armstrong. It's the last in the Otherworld series which I adore and I can't wait to get my copy :) I'm sad to see that the series is ending, but in some ways I'm glad that it is concluding while the books are still all kinds of awesome as there's nothing worse than a series that has been dragged out and the quality has dropped off.

Once Upon a Readathon - Check in (#OUReadathon)

So far I haven't managed to get much reading done so far. I've finished Angel with Attitude but I spent the day with my 19 month old niece so there wasn't any reading time. I'm hoping to really get stuck in this evening.

Once Upon a Readathon Goals (#OUreadathon)

So it's time for the Once Upon a Read-a-Thon to start and I'm really excited to get reading! My goals are pretty loose as I don't want to overwhelm myself, but I'm hoping to read the following:

I've already started Angel with Attitude which is hilarious so far and I can't wait to get stuck into Kelley Armstrong's Darkness Rising books :)

Shelf Candy Saturday (22)

Shelf Candy Saturday is an awesome weekly meme hosted by Five Alarm Book Reviews where each Saturday bloggers defy the saying "never judge a book by its cover" and showcase one that really catches their eye. Covers play a huge role in the books I choose so it's great to have the opportunity to showcase the pretties :)

My shelf candy for this week is Moby Dick by Herman Melville.




When Ishmael sets sail on the whale-ship Pequod one cold Christmas Day, he has no idea of the horrors awaiting him out on the vast and merciless ocean. The ship's strange captain, Ahab, is obsessed with hunting down the famous white whale, Moby Dick, and will stop at nothing on his quest to annihilate his nemesis.





The Vintage classic covers hold a special place in my heart. While the covers of classics are usually dull and boring, Vintage always manage to make theirs stand out. Moby Dick is one of my favourites of their covers.

I love the black and white colour scheme, and the cover looks deceptively like a hand-drawn doodle. The sketchy style also gives a sense of movement to the cover which is great as the scene looks like it should be moving.

The whale even looks like a sperm whale which (according to wikipedia at least) is what Moby Dick was. I'm a total oceanography nerd so I love that this cover is accurate with the species of whale.

Another feature I like is the font for Moby Dick. The little line joining the final ck makes it look like a diving whale's tail and manages to add a little something extra that may not necessarily be seen on the first viewing.
